Daily Thinking Riddles



GROUP 12 DAILY THINKING RIDDLES and SOLUTIONS


MONDAY

You're in a rowboat floating in a tank of water.  There's a big rock in the boat and you decide to drop the rock into the water. The rock sinks to the bottom of the tank. Does the level of the water in the tank go up, down, or stay the same? 

The rock is denser than water because it sinks.  Therefore, it displaces less water than it did before, so the level in the tank goes down. 


TUESDAY

A rectangular birthday cake has a single rectangular slice missing, and you want to divide what's left equally between you and a friend, with a single straight cut.   How should you do this?

Cut the cake on a line connecting the center of the cake and the center of the missing slice. 


WEDNESDAY

You are sealed in a steel room. The walls, ceiling and floor are 6 feet thick. There are no doors, windows, or other openings. The only items that are in the room with you are a mirror and a table. How do you get out?
Warning: This is a riddle to which there is no "logical solution"!

Look in the mirror. See what you SAW. Use the SAW to cut the table into two halves. Two halves make a WHOLE. Crawl through the WHOLE (hole) to escape.


THURSDAY

You are given a five quart jug and a three quart jug. You are sent to a lake and told to come back with exactly one gallon of water.  How do you come up with exactly a gallon of water?

Fill the three quart jug exactly to the brim, and pour it into the empty five quart vessel.  Now refill the three quart jug, and carefully pour as much as will fit into the five quart jug.  Exactly one quart remains in the three quart jug.  Now dump out the larger jug, and pour the exact quart into it.  Fill the three quart jug a final time, and add it to the quart in the larger container.  That makes four quarts - one gallon of water!

A man gets on his horse, on Wednesday, and rides from Virginia to California and back to Virginia on the same Wednesday. How is that possible?

He put 2 men in the 1st room, the third man in the 2nd room, the fourth man in the 3rd room, the fifth man in the 4th room, the sixth man in the 5th room, and the seventh man in the 6th room. He now took one of the men out of the 1st room and placed him in the last, the 7th room. So he managed to put 8 men in 7 rooms with each one having a separate room. Did he really?

Grandma looked up from her rocking chair and said, "As far as I can determine, there is only one anagram of the word TRINKET. Do you know what it is?"

I am as old as John will be when I am twice as old as John was when my age was half the sum of our present ages. John is as old as I was when John was half the age he will be 10 years from now. How old am I?

I drive at an average speed of 30 miles per hour to the railroad station each morning and just catch my train. On a particular morning there was a lot of traffic and at the halfway point I found I had averaged only 15 miles per hour. How fast must I drive for the rest of the way to catch my train?

The train is just about to leave the station and there is no way I will be able to catch it this time.

MONDAY

A donkey was tied to a rope six feet long. A bale of hay was 18 feet away and the donkey wanted to eat the hay. How could he do it?

Very easily as the rope wasn't tied to anything.


TUESDAY

Figure out this one: If you are blindfolded and move one yard to the right, and then 3/4 of a yard to the left and then go west for 1/2 yard, where will you be?

In the dark. (Remember, you are blindfolded!)


WEDNESDAY

After the autumn harvest there were nine ears of corn left in the farmer's field. Each night a hungry rabbit sneaked into the field and took three ears home with him. How many nights did it take to get all the corn?

Nine nights. Two of the ears belonged to the rabbit.


THURSDAY

Two friends were leaving the restaurant and as they passed the cashier, one of them paid his bill but the other handed the cashier a slip of paper with the number 1004180 written on it. The cashier studied the number for a moment, then let the friend pass by without paying. Why?

The number 1004180 : "I owe nothing, for I ate nothing."
