Challenging math problems that will require a lot of math knowledge. There is a mixture of difficulty levels and types of math problems.
19. At a recent gathering of friends, there were nine more women than men. If the ratio of women to men was 5 to 2, how many men and women were at the party?
The answer is 15 women and 6 men. let x = men, then x + 9 = women, so, x + 9/x = 5/2, then 5x = 2 (x + 9), then 5x = 2x + 18, then 3x = 18, then x = 6 and 6 + 9 = 15.
20. Which one of the numbers below would you eventually expect to see, if the sequence continued in this pattern?
606, 612, 618, 624, 630, 636, ...
A) 10,367 B) 75,282 C) 4,862 D) 1,000,003
The answer is B) 75,282. All the numbers in the sequence are evenly divisible by 6, and 75,282 is the only number in the group that is evenly divisible by 6.
21. A number can be divided into 56 and 82 and have the same remainder. What is the lowest positive two-digit number that makes this true?
22. What is the probability of tossing a coin three times and the outcome being one head and two tails (in any order)?
A) 1/2 B) 1/4 C) 3/8 D) 5/8 E) 3/4
The answer is C) 3/8. Probability of tossing a head (H) = 1/2, Probability of tossing a tail (T) = 1/2. P (TTH) = 1/2 x 1/2 x 1/2 = 1/8 + P (THT) = 1/2 x 1/2 x 1/2 = 1/8. P (HTT) = 1/2 x 1/2 x 1/2 = 1/8. Total = 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 = 3/8.
23. What number comes next? Hint: Think of both letters and numbers.
1, 4, 3, 11, 15, 13, 17, ?
The answer is 24. Starting with 1 (one), which has 3 letters, these are consecutive numbers whose letters increase by one in the spelling of their names.
24. What number comes next in this "prime time" sequence puzzle?
8 12 20 28 44 52 68 76 ?
The answer is 92. The sequence consists of consecutive prime numbers multiplied by 4. ie: 2 x 4 = 8, 3 x 4 = 12, 5 x 4 = 20, 7 x 4 = 28, 11 x 4 = 44, and so on.
25. A bucket filled with water weighs 25lbs. When one-half of the water is poured out, the bucket and remaining water weigh 13.5 lbs. How much does the bucket weigh?
The bucket weighs 2 lbs. Here's one way to figure this: x = weight of water, y = weight of bucket, then 1/2x = 11.5 or (25 - 13.5), then x = 23 and y = 2.
